But first…..this piece of golden advice which I stumbled  upon……. written by a guru!

The final product was published after a long struggle.  Writing a manuscript regarding pedagogy was really difficult because criticisms from reviewers were harsh…..and very often it will put people to sleep. Ha Ha Ha.

I also dabble with surgical anatomy, so working with the surgeons allowed me access to the OT and Voilà another publication in the FMAR (downloaded 1700 times in open access)  although the impact factor is low – 0.3 ; as this is deemed vanity publication to the serious publishers). So sad….

There was a time when I did some serious neuroscience research in Switzerland under Dr. Sara Sancho and Prof. Celio. This was the output.

This is my latest publication on neurodegenerative diseases. It is a review paper on how exercise may prevent diseases such as parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s. Read on.. 🙂

This manuscript was written with my collaborators in the U.K. It concerns the future of anatomy teaching in Singapore.

Recently, I had a refresher in Advanced Bio-statistics at the SSHSPH, NUS, and it was refreshing. I learnt heaps but not sure if I did capture everything about REGRESSION  modelling!! They also gave me a book by the Guru Profs. David Machin & Tai Bee Choo.

I am happy that my Indonesian colleagues are including me in this interesting clinical study. Very honored indeed.

YLLSoM Newfield coaching

After 5 months, I graduated from this program. Now I am also an associate coach for the medicals students of YLLSoM.

Very cool graduation ceremony video (co-starring my study buddies, Thilo, Liz Ang & Liz Tey). These people are really cool, and made my learning journey much easier!

Starting Oct 2021, I am offering my coaching service to the medical students of NUS. I am open to working with staff too.

Separately, mentoring is quite different from coaching……. while the latter involves  asking more questions, mentoring requires that you speak more….to the mentees and you need to maintain a safe environment.

I attended this workshop and found it quite useful….

The use of ultrasound (POCUS) will be a game changer in the learning of human anatomy. It has been mentioned that portable US will be akin to a second pair of stethoscope.  Hence my interest in this area.

Attended the WCN in Bangkok recently. I am not a nephrologist but still found these topics very interesting and certainly helps me understand why the need to understand the basic sciences, like anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, genetics, and pathology, well so that the clinical work can be done effectively.

Recently, I got in touch with a Prof from School of Design and Engineering. We got together and decide to carry out some innovations. Here’s the product.

It was refreshing and reinvigorating to work with someone with a different perspective. We wanted to ask can the testing of vision by healthcare providers be aided with the use of VR.

Pretty cool? I think as educators we should be broad minded and not be confined to our our discipline. I have decided to do things my way, and not worry about the politics at work, the red taps, territorial issues  etc. At the end of the day, when students benefit and we can make the world a better place, then we should do it.

Must get to know the eye more……

BACA BEAT 2023

I hope to share more about how anatomy as a subject might influence the  learning styles of medical students here at NUS. We wonder if there is any truth in that the VARK schema could really help one to do better in the learning of relevant anatomy of the inguinal canal.

Multimedia resources to learn the inguinal canal (Done by Nat & Jarrell)

Together with Shina (M4), Joshua (M3), the students and myself gathered 30 medical students to participate in a study to see if the inguinal canal could be learnt in a different way as opposed to didactic lectures and tutorials. We believe that this is a better way to learn the subject. Furthermore, it represents the laparoscopic view of the inguinal region, and really most up to date way of repairing hernias.  We hope to publish the above data soon.

Great work by the students

Peer teaching here at NUS YLLSoM

Together with Jonathan Liang (M3) et al., I have been mentoring these students in their quest to do peer to peer teaching. We believe that when medical students teach, they learn the subject “twice”.  Furthermore, it build up camaraderie amongst graduates even before they become doctors. We also believe that such activities will make the school stand out amongst the many in the world. Please see the below slides and do contact us for more informations.

ARTiFICIAL  INTELLIGENCE & ChatGPT

The above will really challenge our roles as educators.  It is here to stay, whether you like it or not. So instead of fighting it, we should view it as complimentary. In fact, I already started using it to draft some questions.  So….. remember to stay open, and move with times.

I have also contributed to the AI-incorporated, NUS-Med2Lab clinical reasoning platform cases since some time ago. It will be launch soon but in the meantime, do take a look at the following Youtube introduction.

My work as a reviewer for the medical sciences (2023)

This journal “Cureus” is very interesting indeed. It is a departure from the usual reviewing process in which one finds oneself overloaded with editorial styles and requirements. It actually focuses only on the content. I find it very refreshing and hopes that all other journals will follow its way.

Advanced psychometrics

I now have an elementary understanding regarding the usage of psychometrics to help the examination committee deliberate and moderate the outcome of an examination. Specifically, the workshop helps in the decision-making processes, analysis and evaluation of student or resident assessment.

I learnt how to use the GENOVA and Minifac (RASCH) analysis as post-hoc tests to help understand the interactions between the examiners, the students, and the questions. All these data will help to make the next assessment better for the next cohort of students.

Other details

  • The formatting of MCQ/ MEQ/ OPSE
  • How to avoid failing the “good students” and passing the “poor students”.
  • To remove poor questions from the examination for the next cohort
  • To help standardise the examiners, the “hawks” versus the “doves”
  • Strategies to introduce a fairer assessments
  • Cronbach alpha for internal consistency (>0.7)
  • Difficulties index
  • Discrimination index

Some random thoughts…….while teaching the LSM students. Now I understand the generation of ATP in muscle and how it is regulated. Thanks to the student for sending me this graph. When one teaches, one learns too.

Medical literature and publications

One of the reason why I chose to become an academic is because I actually like to write. My English may not be the best and along the way I got better at it. I serve as a reviewer for journals whenever possible.

Cureus

The importance of upgrading my knowledge and skills as I grow older (I am now a young Senior according to the PMO). Happy to have used the SkillsFuture funds to stay relevant in the new economy. Here is evidence of me learning how to use ultrasound to teach relevant anatomy and pathology in health services.

Also, to always contribute back to the system  by serving as reviewers for new literature

Good to confirm that gamification is helping to transformed medical education worldwide!

My involvement with the WCN continues…….

The kidneys are indeed incredible organs that determines one health. Please take care of them! This year I travelled to Buenos Aires, Argentina for the meeting.

Over the last few years, I have been involved in researching into the surgical anatomy of the inguinal canal. We wanted to find out what were the gaps for the medical students in making the transition from basic to procedural anatomy. It turns out that how it was taught could be further optimized. More importantly, it has to be placed in the right context. See our poster that was presented at the WCHS 2024.
