Spirit of Entrepreneurship
I’m Jing Shun
Entrepreneurship has always been, to me, this rewarding journey of continuously redefining and addressing real-world problems through new ideas and innovation. More importantly, it is about placing people at the heart of new innovation, product, and services that we continue to see disruptive technological applications that improve our quality of life and create new market and value network within our entrepreneurial ecosystem. Yet, the entrepreneurship and its essence, even though intuitively understood, and widely exhibited by many, often only conjures the image of people accepting a calculated risk to start a business. Throughout my university journey, I found out that entrepreneurship extends beyond starting businesses; it also encompasses the mindset, one that is attracted to opportunities, innovation, and value creation.
I believe in the notion that everyone—all human being—is inherently innovative and creative. Each of us is an entrepreneur within the different facets of our lives while living up to our life calling. Within our day to day activities, there are many capacities for us to exhibit the spirit of entrepreneurship. We can do so by questioning assumption and conventional understanding, reassessing and examining whether there is a better alternative solution, doing things differently, and applying what we know or have learnt in a novel way that can contribute beyond narrowly defined job scope or responsibilities to derive bigger and broader meaning and value behind our work.
I found that the spirit of entrepreneurship provide that lens by which I look at how my university journey has unfolded in the different facets of my experience as an engineer, innovator, leader, and a learner who believe in continuous learning and more importantly, applying the learning in a meaningful way. My next few pieces elucidate how my experience in NUS, USP, and the environment I was exposed to crystallised my understanding of what it means to embody the spirit of entrepreneurship, and how each and every one of us can embed that spirit and vigour into all the different aspect of their life and work.
