Bio Almutawa

Rana AlMutawa is a PhD Candidate at the University of Oxford, St. Antony’s College.

Her PhD dissertation is focused on exploring intra-Orientalism in the Arb world and the marginalization and Arabizing of local cultures in the Arab Gulf. Rana has published several articles on nationalism and the invention of traditions, such as an article titled “National Dress in the U!E. Constructions of !uthenticity” by BRISMES’ New Middle Eastern Studies Journal. She has presented in various conferences, such as the Gulf Research Meeting in Cambridge, and will present in an upcoming workshop about gender in the UAE at NYUAD. Prior to joining Oxford, Rana worked as an instructor and researcher at Zayed University in Dubai.

She holds a master’s degree in International !ffairs and a master’s degree in Public Policy from Columbia University and the University of Tokyo, respectively.
