Ways to reduce our e-waste!

Hi readers, for today’s blog post, I will be sharing on some tips to reduce our electronic waste. As seen in the previous blog,  as the world average income increases particularly in developed countries, the general population now have higher purchasing power to consume more e-gadgets ranging from smartphones, laptops and tablets or ipads. All these occur as a result of electronic consumerism and the fast pace of high tech evolution that affects environmental sustainability.

Ways to reduce our e-waste:

  1. Donate or sell working electronics
    1. Sell them on carousell
    2. Donate to those in need
  2. Consume less
    1. Before buying anything, ask yourself if you really need it- yes although it is hard
    2. Why not simply upgrade your laptop software instead of buying a new one
    3. Use your old mobile phone for GPS device, remote controls or music player
      1. Instead of throwing it, consider repurposing it
  3. Recycle them back to the retailers
    1. Most retailers and major brands now have in store and drop off site for proper recycling options
  4. Never dispose your electronics in the bin
    1. Most gadgets contain a number of toxic materials that are harmful for the environment and people who works at the landfill
  5. Extend the life of electronics
    1. Be protective case, keep your device clean and avoid overcharging the battery
  6. Buy environmentally friendly electronics
    1. In Singapore, we can look out for about Mandatory Energy Labelling Scheme (MELS) and Minimum Energy Performance Standards 9MEPS)
  7. Be aware of the environmental impact from the production of e-gadgets!

To conclude, always be more mindful of the electronics we consume and play a part in reducing e-waste. If we do not reduce our growing consumption on electronics, we will continue to contribute to pollution and worsening our environment.
