Here is an example of the microscopic examination of joint fluid, under polarised light microscopy.

What does this picture show? 

The picture shows numerous needle shaped crystals that 'glow' under polarised light microscopy. This morphologic picture is compatible with uric acide crystals. 

If a colour filter were used, the presence of negative birefringence will be noted (2nd picture) – i.e. crystals pointing in a certain direction will appear yellow, while those at right angles to that appear blue.
