Below are works of last year winners: Natacha Lesty with “Disco Choco” wins Design Challenge 08!
The Disco Choco concept focuses on the theme “disco”: it wants to share the good vibes of pleasant moments, shiny colours, music, pop … The pack wants to be attractive in store and should make consumer desire this product.
Embrechts with “Soft Chocolate Skin” wins the Public Prize
The feeling of existing chocolate packs is always very boring and clean. Also chocolate packaging makes noise and this can sometimes be annoying for you or other people when you want to enjoy your chocolate in a public place.
“V for Vase” presents the processes and results of a workshop collaboration between Hans Tan Studio and the National University of Singapore Industrial Design Programme.
The “imaginative thinking” workshop directed by Hans Tan consists of a series of progressive exercises aimed at unraveling one’s imaginal thoughts and developing one’s lateral thinking abilities. “Vase” was chosen as the subject for the workshop where each of the 24 final year industrial design students apply aptitudes harnessed from the workshop to reconceptualize the notion of a ‘vase’ and develop a design proposition in the form of an object or an installation.
The exhibition reveals 24 conceptual vases and documents more than a hundred unique vase definitions developed during the workshop, which would prove more telling than that found in the dictionary – “An open container, usually used for holding flowers or for ornamentation.”

Corporate gifts and premiums are effective marketing tools, but are easily forgotten by consumers. The attachment of an experiential encounter with the gift would, however, be able to create a lifelong memory. Hence, an exquisite teabag collection, inspired by Singapore’s iconic oolong tea, 钓鱼(diao yu), has been created to also cater to the caffeine needs of a working adult, both locally and internationally. Besides breaking apart from conventional appearance, the tea filter will also be made with environmental-friendly material for the eco-friendly consumers.
3rd Prize: Plantimo, CHENG SIEW MING
Nature in sight can make people feel happy and relax. But what if nature plays another role in office?
“Plantimo” is the product everyone will keep eyeing on. It serves as a timer clock which counts down to the end of work. User set the time by turning the leaf knob that works on the turn-and-dial phone mechanism. Ticking off silently, the plant will rise slowly, seemingly growing to life, and finally a bud opens slightly to reveal the hidden flower. This mimics the mood of workers, blossoming after a hard day of work, revealing the fruit of labour.
The Kokuyo Design Awards opens its 8th year as the competition that seeks to commercialize outstanding product designs presented from designers and users worldwide.
In the 2008 competition we received 1240 submissions (970 from Japan, 270 from overseas) and the competition continues to expand as an international award in product design. Also last year we released three new products from 2007 winning entries, “Kamikire” writing paper, “Beetle Tip” three-tipped highlighter, and “Tidbit” memo pad.
The Kokuyo Design Award seeks to cast creativity and ideas into commercial products available to everyone. So come and participate in the Kokuyo Design Award 2009. We look forward to your creative entries.
Theme: Foundations
Needed most today are solid foundations:
Our families and friends, leaders we can trust,
Our beliefs, values, and identity,
The cause or purpose of our actions, and a reason for being,
The support for our basic needs, a place where we can live peacefully, a rewarding workplace,
The water, air, and land that make all the processes of life possible.
The competition seeks new designs for items to serve as foundations for future ways of life:
Safe and innovative stationery our families and friends can use;
Furniture that supports and enhances the energetic spirit of people we work with.
Things that prove useful in emergencies, things we can’t do without,
Tools and objects that assists us and provides us with emotional support,
Things that we feel joy in buying and continue to enable us to experience the pleasure we felt when we first acquired it.
In times of worsening economic conditions, surely there are things that are all the more vital to us than ever before.
Additionally, the competition are looking for items that are also meaningful in protecting the earth’s environment.
