The Kokuyo Design Awards opens its 8th year as the competition that seeks to commercialize outstanding product designs presented from designers and users worldwide.
In the 2008 competition we received 1240 submissions (970 from Japan, 270 from overseas) and the competition continues to expand as an international award in product design. Also last year we released three new products from 2007 winning entries, “Kamikire” writing paper, “Beetle Tip” three-tipped highlighter, and “Tidbit” memo pad.
The Kokuyo Design Award seeks to cast creativity and ideas into commercial products available to everyone. So come and participate in the Kokuyo Design Award 2009. We look forward to your creative entries.

Theme: Foundations

Needed most today are solid foundations:
Our families and friends, leaders we can trust,
Our beliefs, values, and identity,
The cause or purpose of our actions, and a reason for being,
The support for our basic needs, a place where we can live peacefully, a rewarding workplace,
The water, air, and land that make all the processes of life possible.

The competition seeks new designs for items to serve as foundations for future ways of life:
Safe and innovative stationery our families and friends can use;
Furniture that supports and enhances the energetic spirit of people we work with.
Things that prove useful in emergencies, things we can’t do without,
Tools and objects that assists us and provides us with emotional support,
Things that we feel joy in buying and continue to enable us to experience the pleasure we felt when we first acquired it.
In times of worsening economic conditions, surely there are things that are all the more vital to us than ever before.
Additionally, the competition are looking for items that are also meaningful in protecting the earth’s environment.

please send your design work of practical kitchen accessories, objects and utensils for food reparation, cooking, cool storage, new waste containers, … innovations that combine effective design with environmental issues and energy/water conservation.
you can send drawings and / or photos of prototypes of what you would like to show in this exhibition.

from the humble fireplace to electrical oven cooktops, kitchens have evolved over time to become much more than simply an area for cooking. nowadays it is a place for eating and socializing – an integral part of our daily lifestyle. as the new hub of the modern home, we expect more from our kitchen – convenience, comfort, cleanliness, the latest technology – while simultaneously demanding less – less energy consumption, water usage, and waste.

it’s a delicate balance, and one that is in a constant state of development. in this spirit of evolving the archetype, designboom in collaboration with dwell on design will host a ‘kitchen ecology: recipes for good design’ exhibition. it’s now time for a kitchen strategy session, making it the ideal place to
reduce our environmental impact. just like with any recipe, we need to modify our habits and experiment with new (and old) ingredients and methods to be successful.

send your work
please email your submissions to: mail@designboom.com
subject line: ‘kitchen-ecology‘.
emails should not exceed 3 MB – (.jpg, .gif, psd, pdf, doc files accepted)

registration deadline
Applications can be submitted from March 16, 2008 and will be accepted through to 12pm, GMT June 08, 2009, when the competition will be officially closed.

One of Italy’s most established and iconic brands, Peroni Nastro Azzurro, in collaboration with Alessi, are collaborating with designboom to organize the Peroni Nastro Azzurro Blue Ribbon Design Awards 2009 in the UK.

Peroni Nastro Azzurro has created these awards to offer you the chance to design pieces for the aperitivo occasion, which are influenced and inspired by the Peroni Nastro Azzurro brand.

Aperitivo is an authentic Italian tradition that combines delicious small plate of food with refreshing alcoholic drinks during the early evening hours as a relaxing prelude to dinner. Aperitivo is recognised as a reason for social gathering, and is a stylish and elaborate affair. Aperitivo is also a fantastic brief to design against due to the transitional nature of the occasion. It’s day to night. It’s work to play.

We expect to receive innovative, stylish and original design applications of aperitivo accessories,
including glasses, tableware, small furniture, tools and gadgets for the perfect aperitivo time.

The custom of enjoying aperitivo is deeply rooted in Italian culture, with Italians regularly enjoying aperitivo as part of everyday life – in public spaces, cafes and bars that serve up sumptuous aperitivo;
gallery openings and parties; and amongst family and friends at home.

NUS has been ranked as 28 in iF ranking University.

The “university” category joins the other two iF ranking categories — “company” and “creative” — which were launched in November 2008. The new ranking category is based on the student-focused “iF concept award”, which invites entries from design and architecture students around the world.

The university’s position in the iF ranking reflects the overall results of the iF concept awards over the past three years. For more information about this ranking, please refer to http://www.ifdesign.de/presse_detail_e.html?pmid=406. For the full table, please visit: http://www.ifdesign.de/ranking_tabellen_e

Each year about 3000 of projects from around 40 different countries joined the awards.

NUS ID has won few iF awards during past 4 years.

LeapFrog: Walker for children

LeapFrog helps children with impaired mobility to rise and stand from a seated position, allowing them to learn and practice walking. Using gas springs, it automatically provides partial uplift when the child tries to stand, and also folds into a chair when it tries to sit. This frees caregivers from the chore of repeatedly carrying the child in and out of the walker between walking and resting. This enables the child to practice more often, and interact more with his environment and people around him. This gentle system gives the child a sense of independence, achievement and self-worth. Its fun and toy-like aesthetics help to integrate it into society.

The jury: thought trough and intelligent design.

MoYo! Playhouse: Playhouse
Designer: Tan Yong Kai

With its innovative concept the MoYo! playhouse differs intentionally from traditional playhouses. Four design elements characterize the MoYo! system: it comprises a main body that can be arranged into any imaginable kind of shape; bendy single elements that can be attached to the main body using a connecting system; connecting tunnels for extending the play surface; a number of fabric membranes that can be attached using Velcro connectors and provide even greater scope for individual creativity. Together, these four innovative design elements mean the playhouse can be redesigned at will with great flexibility.

Music Label: Home Entertainment System
Designer: Design:Yit Sheng Eugene Chin and Yong Kai, Tan

The inspiration started with the idea of designing a ‘sticker’ home entertainment system that promotes creativity and freedom of application in different environments. It targets young couples that seek originality and freshness in their home décor, with the desire to express them more readily. The Music Label System creatively transforms anyone into a designer – instantly!

About TedTalk

TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design. It started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from those three worlds. Since then its scope has become ever broader.

TEDTalks began as a simple attempt to share what happens at TED with the world. Under the moniker “ideas worth spreading,” talks were released online. They rapidly attracted a global audience in the millions. Indeed, the reaction was so enthusiastic that the entire TED website has been reengineered around TEDTalks, with the goal of giving everyone on-demand access to the world’s most inspiring voices.
