Singapore Writers Festival 2011 – Call For Volunteers!

Hello Friends and Fellow Lovers of Literary Arts!

The Singapore Writers Festival (SWF) depends on volunteers like you to assist with several aspects of the Festival, including front-of-house management, venue operations and artist liaison. No prior experience is required – we welcome you as long as you are responsible, friendly and armed with keen initiative and genuine interest in gaining experience working in a festival while meeting people from all around the world.

If you have prior experience in the SWF or experience leading a small team of volunteers, we would be happy to have you on board as a venue manager.

Volunteering with us is a fantastic way to meet and work with new people; watch free events and experience what it is like to be part of the SWF!

Volunteers need to be 16 years old and above and able to commit to at least 2 weekend days.

VENUES:

  • Singapore Management University (Campus Green; School of Information Systems; Li Ka Shing Library)
  • Singapore Art Museum
  • National Museum

DATES:

22 – 30 October 2011

90% of programmes take place over the 2 weekends and on the Deepavali holiday, with trade events and some book launches on the weekdays.

Peak periods:

22-23 Oct & 29-30 Oct (Sat-Sun); 26 Oct (Wed – Deepavali holiday)

8.30am – 9pm

Other times:

21 Oct (Fri), 4.30pm – 9pm

General ushers and stage managers for SWF Opening Gala will be required on Fri 21 October.

24-25 Oct (Mon-Tue); 27-28 Oct (Thu-Fri), 8.30am – 9pm

Venue and Room Managers will be required for mostly book launches, trade events and gallery sitting.

JOB DUTIES include but are not limited to:

Venue Manager (4 positions only)

  • Main contact point between room managers, venue technicians/staff and SWF organizer
  • Manage room managers effectively
  • Have an overview of operations in specific venue

Room Manager/Front-of-House Manager

  • Registration / Ticket-tearing
  • Ensure that tools and supplies (eg. bottled water, clipboards, paper & pens) are sufficient for the panellists and moderators and refreshed between sessions
  • Timekeeper for events
  • Floor manager during Q&A
  • Audience surveys
  • Door & Venue ushers
  • Handle and organize crowds

Liaison Officers (15 on 1st weekend; 25 on 2nd weekend)

  • Meet writers at airport on arrival (includes artists who arrive after midnight)
  • Send writers to airport for departure
  • Responsible for ensuring writers arrive on time for events
  • Standby to help writers with requests

*Please indicate proficiency in other languages

Gallery Sitter

  • Standby to explain Donna Ong’s art exhibition to visitors

Be present at SAM Chapel from 10am to 7pm, daily

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Age 16 and above
  • Committed and responsible
  • Keen interest in furthering the pursuit of social wellness through literature
  • Gallery sitters must have interest in visual arts and be able to present exhibitions effectively
