Mob attacks against foreigners have spread from Durban to several cities in South Africa. The situation remains fluid.

Singaporeans travelling to South Africa are strongly advised to closely monitor local news and developments. They should avoid areas of public disturbances, be vigilant at all times and observe instructions from local authorities.

Singaporeans are strongly encouraged to eRegister with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at https://eregister.mfa.gov.sg to facilitate contact in the event of an emergency. They should take all necessary precautions for personal safety including purchasing comprehensive travel and medical insurance. Please check with the insurers if in doubt on the terms and conditions of the insurance coverage.

Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (TUFS) Summer Program 2015

TUFS Short Stay Summer Program 2015  (10 July  – 4 August 2015)

This three-week intensive program is aimed at learners of the Japanese language who are currently enrolled in TUFS’ partner universities.

The program offer two courses – Business Japanese and General Japanese. Both courses are designed to be practical ones providing the learners hands-on exposure to everyday Japanese language in Japanese education, culture, and society. Each class will consist of a small number of participants – 12 or less. Supporting the selected participants from TUFS’ partner universities to improve their Japanese language skills, this program will provide invaluable opportunities for the participants to experience the real Japan. General Japanese includes off-campus activities focused on Japanese culture experience while Business Japanese includes a company visit and interacting opportunities with Japanese people in various career fields.

With the cooperation from TUFS International Student Support Association, on-campus Japanese culture experience – tea ceremony, Kimono try-on, flower arrangement, calligraphy and interacting opportunities with Japanese students at TUFS will also be offered.

Summer Program @ University of Tübingen, Germany

The University of Tübingen is pleased to announce their Summer Program in “International & European Studies” is open for applications. The programs taught entirely in English offer students a unique chance to study Europe and the European Union at one of Germany’s most renowned Universities. Partial scholarships for highly motivated international students are available.

Study Europe and the EU in Germany:

 Come and join our short-term program “International & European Studies” at the University of Tübingen!

ACADEMIC PROGRAM: You can take courses in European and European Union (EU) politics, law, history, international business and culture. Seminars are taught in English by renowned Tübingen researchers. You will also attend a German language class. Classes are small and individual care and mentoring is guaranteed at all times.

EXCURSIONS: You will visit Strasbourg, Berlin and Frankfurt, take a tour of the European Parliament, interview EU-politicians, and visit influential companies (like Mercedes, Erbe, Porsche, Ritter Sport) in the economically strong region of Baden-Württemberg.

INTERCULTURAL WORKSHOP: You will gain one of the key qualifications in an increasingly globalized world: Intercultural competence. In the workshop you will reflect on your intercultural experience in Germany. Studying in a diverse, multicultural group will further foster your knowledge about other cultures.

BUDDY PROGRAM: Within the Buddy Program a student of the University of Tübingen teams up with a participant. One German “buddy” will take care of you during your entire stay in Tübingen. This will allow you to get to know German students, and experience student life first-hand.

LOCATION: Tübingen is the ideal location for this small and highly effective academic program: it is a picturesque, safe University town and with its romantic old town it offers you multiple opportunities to experience German culture in cafés, talks. Or how about a fun punting boat trip (“Stocherkahn”) on the river Neckar on a sunny day.

University of Cologne – Summer School on Environmental Studies (13 -31 July 2015)

The University of Cologne is organizing a Summer School on Environmental Studies from 13 -31 July 2015.

NUS has been selected by U of Cologne as one of the top 5 universities in Santander network to be offered this opportunity to participate in the programme. The course will focus on aspects that draw upon environmental studies from an interdisciplinary perspective focusing on the three key sectors for sustainable cities: solid waste management, urban public transport and urban green spaces. The three-week program consists of different modules which focus various aspects of environmental studies. It includes lectures and workshops as well as self-study and excursions.

University of Cologne – Cologne Summer School on Environmental Studies

Target group: International advanced Bachelor’s students from partner universities of the University of Cologne and the Santander Universities network

Costs: The University of Cologne covers the academic program, study material, welcome and fair well dinner, accommodation, public transfer ticket and excursions. The participant has to bear the following costs: travel costs including costs for visa, insurance plan (compulsory, 69 €), board and any other costs that may arise.

University of Amsterdam Summer School (For Undergraduates)

Dear Students,

The University of Amsterdam UvA Summer School is now open for application. At the UvA Summer School, students can pursue their studies in a wide range of disciplines while enjoying social and academic activities in one of the most culturally and intellectually vibrant cities of Western Europe – Amsterdam, capital of the Netherlands. Courses range from the sciences and social sciences to the humanities. Many are interdisciplinary.

Students who are interested can apply directly to the course of choice at UvA. Application procedures vary and are indicated online under each course.

As NUS is a member of the Universitas 21 network and/or LERU network, NUS students may be eligible for a partial scholarship of €500. Please note that this scholarship is administered by UvA and recipients will be selected by them.

Tuition Waiver Places for FASS Students (Undergraduates Only)

FASS has 2 tuition waiver places for the University of Amsterdam Summer School. Students who are interested has to submit their summer school application directly to UvA. Please note that students currently in their final semester (Semester 2, AY14/15) will not be eligible for the tuition waiver application.

To be considered for the fee waiver, you will need to submit the FASS form below together with a copy of your latest unofficial transcript (available in myisis.)  Both documents are to be submitted via email titled” Tuition Waiver Application for UvA Summer School” to studyabroadfass@nus.edu.sg by Fri, 27th Feb 2015.

Waseda Summer Session 2015

Warm greetings from Waseda University, Tokyo, Japan.

Starting on June 29 – July 23, 2015, we will offer a 4-week summer session for international and Waseda students at the undergraduate level. Students can take part in 2 courses out of 10 which are wide aspects of business, culture, economics, history, politics and sociology in the context of Japan and Asia pacific, offering 4 credits for 2 courses. The classes are taught in English by experienced faculty members from Waseda and visiting professors from our partner institutions. Japanese classes can be taken as optional courses.

We will also organize extracurricular activities such as field trips, site visits and cultural events to experience Tokyo and Japan.

Call for Applications: NUS-in-Yale Summer Programme

Programme Dates: 1 June – 3 July 2015

Description:

The programme is a 5-week study stint at Yale University during its Summer Session A. Selected NUS students will study and interact with Yale students, stay at Yale residential colleges and experience various aspects of Yale undergraduate life. Students will select two modules in the humanities and social sciences. More details on the Yale Summer Session are available at http://summer.yale.edu (note that NUS-in-Yale refers to Yale Summer Session A only).

ELIGIBILITY:

This programme is open to Year 1 and 2 students of USP and USP partner faculties (BIZ, FASS, FOE, FOS, SDE, SOC and LAW), with a minimum CAP of 3.5 (Law students can disregard the CAP stipulation, since the Law faculty is not on the modular system).

Priority will be given to Year 2 students.

For selected USP students, substitution credit can be given for one inquiry tier USP module. The two modules taken at Yale may substitute for major/faculty requirements upon approval by the department or faculty; approval may be sought through the usual procedure for SEP module substitution. USP students are encouraged to further develop what they have learned in these programmes through supervised independent study.

For selected non-USP students, approval from home faculty or department should be sought for module substitution/mapping.

Cost:

NUS provides a substantial student grant to cover the programme fees. Each student selected for this programme will:

  •  Co-pay a sum of SGD 2,500; plus
  • Purchase and arrange his/her own return air ticket, travel insurance and visa.

As this programmes is already heavily subsidised, there will be no further NASA funding.

USP will advise on travel dates.

Application:

Please apply HERE along with submission of the following:

  • A one-page Curriculum Vitae (name it as  ‘CV_YourName’)
  • An original essayof max 800 words (Name it as ‘Yale_YourName’). In this essay, describe a research problem in the humanities and/or social sciences. Explain in some detail why you think this problem makes for a good research topic, and briefly tell us how you might go about solving this problem.

As with all USP International Programmes, students need a minimum CAP of 3.5 to apply.

For Year 1 students with no CAP, please leave the CAP field blank.

 Closing date: Sunday, 1 February 2015

Shortlisted candidates will be required to attend an interview. We look forward to receiving your application.
