ABOUT THE EVENT
Over the last three years Indonesian urban-sector civil society has gathered for an annual one-day event called the Urban Social Forum. While Indonesian civil society activity has been fragmented for some time, urban-sector efforts are emerging in many cities, providing signs of reemergence. The Urban Social Forum is an example of this; the free and open forum provides an opportunity for activists, social leaders, academics, and youth from across the country to gather, share experiences, learn from one another, and network. The event has grown tenfold since its humble beginnings, with this year’s event in Surabaya attracting more than a thousand participants. The seminar will discuss how the Urban Social Forum works, implications for urban civil society, and what next year’s event has in store.
