NUS Career Fair 2013

The annual NUS Career Fair is here! With over 200 companies participating in the largest on-campus recruitment event, be prepared to meet company representatives from various industries. Do not miss this opportunity to network with potential employers. There will also be career and industry talks by industry practitioners on what recruiters look for and what the employment outlook for the coming year will be like.

This year, you can expect two different sets of companies on 29 January and 1 February. So how do you know which day should you visit the fair? To ensure that your visit to the NUS Career Fair 2013 is a fruitful one, you need to research on participating companies, prepare your resume, brush up on your networking skills, as well as get your business attire ready!

To help you with that, participate in Suit Up! 2013, the pre-career fair event which prepares you to stand out in your job hunt!

With rising competition in the graduate recruitment market, there is an increasing need to help senior and graduating students differentiate themselves when faced with global competition for highly sought-after jobs.

The StepUp module gives students the knowledge and skills to step up their career planning and job search strategies. This five-week tutorial module guides them in identifying the careers and jobs that best align with their profiles and interests, and equips them with the essential career skills to market and transit themselves successfully into their first internship or job.

Similar to the concept of Speed Dating, our Engineering Students arrived at Shaw Foundation Alumni House last Friday on the 7th September evening to meet their Engineering seniors and to network with them from table to table!

We had a whole range of alumni from process management to oil and gas, to seminconductor, product design, and even consulting and banking!

We hope you had a great time getting insights on the different industries that your seniors work in and how you can better maximize your student life to get an edge in the recruitment market!

NCC1001 HeadStart Module:

designed for Freshmen, will help you identify your strengths and interests early and enable you to plan your curricular and co-curricular activities for the next 3 – 4 years in NUS in an optimal way that will help you hone your soft skills, and build on your expertise and experience. HeadStart will be piloted with the AY2012/13 freshmen from the Faculty of Science but freshmen and Year 2 students are welcome to sign up for the module.

StepUp Module NCC1000:

For year 3s and 4s, this module will help you identify careers that best align to your profiles and interests and equip you with the essential skills to differentiate yourself and transit successfully into your first job. This module is opened to Year 3 and 4 students from AY12/13 except students who have read and passed BSF1001. Students who have already gone through some career workshops or have secured jobs are still encouraged to attend this module to reinforce these essential life-long skills.

The employment market in 2012 remained hot after gaining traction from the strong growth projection of year 2011. As with most other NUS Career Centre events, Jobconnect 2012 attracted over a thousand students and alumni promising more than 1000 job vacancies offered by over 60 participating organizations, spanning across many sectors.

Guest-of-honour – Professor Tan Eng Chye, Deputy President (Academic Affairs) and Provost of National University of Singapore graced the event acknowledging the roles employers, students and staff have played to make the event possible. Jobsconnect 2012 boasted participation from organizations from public service, consulting, finance, healthcare, IT, engineering and many more. Students are rewarded with a unique opportunity to get interviewed by or network with their desired employers of different sectors.

Students not only gained experience in communication and networking skills but too gained insights into various industries by interacting with employers.

Apart from the interview and networking sessions, Jobsconnect 2012 conducted career talks that seek to enlighten students on topics ranging from financial literacy, career progression and grooming tips. Fringe activities such as resume photograph taking and handwriting analysis were also available at the event.

Similar to other career events, our career advisors were also on-site to provide expertise and advices to students on their resume and career options. It was particularly heartwarming to receive overwhelming requests and many positive feedbacks from students who had benefitted from these quick sessions with the career advisors. To those who had missed out on such opportunity, our career advisors remain available to speak to you with regards to your career paths and transitions at the NUS Career Centre.

Jobsconnect 2012 had been a resounding success. Since initiated three years ago to tide students through the bleak employment market in the global financial crisis, Jobsconnect had grown from strength to strength becoming an annual feature on NUS calendar. We appreciated students for their continued support and participation. We are excited and already looking forward to upcoming career events line up ahead. Until then.
