PROJECTS for 2009/2010

ACTION

NUS Cat Cafe
NUS Cat Cafe aims to provide a humane and effective method of controlling the cat population on campus and to provide the cats on campus with a safe environment to call home through a programme of sterilization, responsible feeding and cat management within the NUS campus. For more details on what this project is about, go here.

Animal Shelter Visits
Every weekend, our PEACE volunteers visit Metta Cats, a local animal shelter that takes in abandoned and injured animals ranging from cats and dogs, to rabbits and chickens, to help with the various tasks of cleaning the premises and feeding the animals. Each year, PEACE also makes a trip down to Noah’s Ark Natural Animal Sanctuary in Johor where members can spend a day interacting with the hundreds of animals that roam free in the animal sanctuary.

Wildlife Outreach

Details pending.

EDUCATION

Film Screenings & Discussions
To educate and to get people involved in issues of animal welfare, NUS PEACE organizes film screenings that are followed by open discussions, and invites speakers to be on the discussion panel.

Animal Welfare Week Exhibition @ NUS Central Library 2009/2010
In an effort to create greater awareness of animal welfare issues among the NUS student community, NUS PEACE invites local animal protection groups and related organizations such as SPCA, ACRES (Animal Concerns Research and Education Society) and VSS (Vegetarian Society of Singapore) to put up their exhibitions at the NUS Central Library. Posters and exhibition panels, along with a screening of a documentary on animal cruelty in intensive commercial farming, are showcased to educate the NUS community on animal welfare. Petitions are signed and merchandise are sold to raise funds for local animal shelters.

ADVOCACY

Singapore Animal Welfare Symposium 2010
The Singapore Animal Welfare Symposium is an annual event organized by ACRES and NUS PEACE with the aim of providing a shared platform for the various local animal interest groups, animal-related organisations and the general public to convene and discuss issues affecting domestic and wild animals, and those exploited on an industrial scale. The event puts the spotlight on pressing concerns in animal welfare and allows all of us who care about animals to discuss how we can successfully address these issues and together come up with effective strategies to end animal exploitation. Each year, the Symposium has also seen the successful launch of the “Animal Protectors Grant”, the first ever scheme which allows groups of all ages to apply for a grant of up to S$1,500 to fund their animal welfare initiatives. Food4Thought Campaign 2009/2010

NUS PEACE joins NUSSU SAVE (Students Against the Violation of the Earth) in a campaign that aims at getting people to relook their diets for a better world. The objective of Food4Thought is to raise a greater awareness of the unsustainability and the animal exploitation that takes place behind every meat-based meal. This campaign explains why, for the sake of the animals and the environment, the shift towards a vegetarian or vegan diet is the ethical and responsible thing to do.
