Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (ACRES) will be celebrating World Animal Day this year at The Atrium @ Orchard again, and this year our focus will be on the issue of shark fin soup.

Here’s a chance to have fun and speak out in our fight against the shark fin tradition, so don’t miss out on this chance to be part of this exciting event!

When was the last time you were encouraged to break things? This weekend, ACRES is inviting everyone to come into town to throw a soup bowl against a wall. The broken pieces will be used on the spot to create a work of art — a gigantic, 15m long mosaic of a shark.

As many as 100 million sharks are killed every year, and many of them end up in soup bowls across Asia. The shark fin soup tradition is wasteful and destructive, because when sharks die, the entire marine food chain also collapses. So for this World Animal Day, we are asking you to help reverse this habit, and start putting sharks back together.

You will be asked to donate $2.00 for each soup bowl, and the proceeds will go towards ACRES’ education and animal welfare efforts. So come down to The Atrium@Orchard, near Plaza Singapura, to show that you care about animals, the environment and about leaving our marine legacy for future generations.

And have fun smashing bowls, breaking traditions and creating art— all at once.

Here’s something to put down on your calendar, for the mid semester break!

This coming monday (September 21) is the United Nations’ International Day of Peace – a global holiday when individuals, communities, nations and governments highlight efforts to promote peace between all living things!
This year, the Jane Goodall Institute (Singapore) is coming together with several other local NGOs including UNIFEM Singapore, ACRES, WWF Singapore, SPCA, SEC, NSS, Student Care Services, and more to celebrate this special day. Participants can create iconic peace doves out of recycled materials before the event and then fly them around Singapore on the Day of Peace. This celebration seeks to spread messages of harmonious interactions with animals, the environment, and people in a very positive and inspiring way.

About the Speaker: Grant Pereira has been an environmentalist and social activist for more than 30 years. He founded “The Green Volunteers” and is actively engaged in its program S.P.R.O.U.T.S. (Singapore Proudly Replanting Our Unique Trees and Shrubs). He sits on the Board of Advisors of Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and is a representative for The Elephant Nature Foundation and the Orang Utan Foundation (Indonesia). In 2000, he was awarded The Green Leaf Award by the Ministry of Environment for his ongoing efforts in making Singapore a cleaner and greener place.

Sinema (an independent cinema that shows mostly local and independent films) is hosting a film festival (Films For Change) from now (9 September) till 1 October. The focus of the film fest is social action, and you definitely should check out the film schedule if you’re interested! :D I’m not sure about you, but I really think it’s incredibly exciting and awesome that a month long film festival on the theme of social action can be pulled off here in Singapore!

The main themes of the festival are: Children and Youth, Human Rights Inequality, Social Media, and Sustainability (which includes the treatment of animals).

Earthlings will be screened several times during the festival, and the  screening of Earthlings on 20 September will be followed by a forum with speakers from ACRES. There will also be a talk on 29 September about cruelty free living.

Hey all!

I just watched the preview of The Cove last night, and it really grieved me to see people exploiting and slaughtering such peaceful and intelligent animals as dolphins! These animals belong in the wild, and we shouldn’t continue to bring these animals into captivity, and exploit them purely for entertainment purposes and profit.

The movie will be screened in selected GV theatres for the next 3 weeks. Do catch it if you can, and as soon as possible! The dolphin hunting season in Taiji, Japan, starts in september!

Movie Synopsis:

The Cove follows a team of activists and filmmakers as they infiltrate a heavily-guarded cove in Taiji, Japan. In this remote village they witness and document activities deliberately being hidden from the public: More than 20,000 dolphins and porpoises are being slaughtered each year and their meat, containing toxic levels of mercury, is being sold as food in Japan, often times labeled as whale meat.

The majority of the world is not aware this is happening. The Taiji cove is blocked off from the public. Cameras are not allowed inside and the media does not cover the story. It’s critical that we get the word out in Japan.  It’s critical that we get the word out-everywhere.  We believe that once the Japanese people know, they will demand change.

The (wild) dolphins are safe, at least for now! :D And I’m incredibly psyched because to me, this really shows how the mere awareness about a single issue, can be so powerful in driving change!

But the hunting and trading of dolphins in Taiji, Japan is only one part of the issue. Even if dolphin hunting and trading stops, there’s also the question: what are we going to do about the dolphins who are currently in captivity, and especially the dolphins in sunny island Singapore, and the others that may be brought in  to the Sentosa IR,  which opens next year?

Are sharks killed mainly for their fins, their meat or both? Some believe that it is western propaganda that sharks are killed mainly for their fins, saying instead that they are slaughtered chiefly for their meat. However, the majority viewpoint is that the demand for sharks’ fin is the key factor driving sharks towards extinction. Hear both sides of the story and watch the exciting debate between proponents of the two camps. The debaters include Dr Giam Choo Hoo, Regional Representative for Asia (Alternate) for CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) Animals Committee, and Louis Ng, Executive Director of ACRES (Animal Concerns Research and Education Society). This debate and public forum will be chaired by Dr Shawn Lum, President of Nature Society (Singapore), and is open to the public and the media.

The debate is about the reasons causing sharks to become extinct, but the more important take home point: sharks are highly endangered, and the reasons for this are largely anthropogenic (caused by humans actively hunting them)! You might want to check out the documentary “The Cove” that will be showing in Vivo City at GV, this coming wednesday, 26 Aug from 7:15pm . The documentary exposes the cruel and abusive practices engaged by fishermen, who conduct dolphin hunts off a cove in Taijii, Japan. The screening will be followed by a Q&A session with guest speaker Ms. Anbarasi Boopal, Director of the ACRES Wildlife Rescue Centre. It’ll be a great opportunity to find out what you can do to help!

We’d like to invite you to an upcoming event taking place on Saturday, August 22nd. We’ll begin with our AGM at 5pm, where we’ll be discussing our projects for AY 09/10 and electing new committee members. This will be followed by a Welcome BBQ Party by the pool, starting at 6pm. There’ll be some great food, including our very own homemade veg burgers!  The venue will be 50 Westcoast Crescent, #02-10 Westbay Condominiums (about a 10 min walk from campus). Be there or be square, seriously!

PEACE (People Ending Animal Cruelty and Exploitation) is an NUS interest group, soon to be a full-fledged (CCA conferring) Society, committed to doing what we can to foster education, advocacy, and action to promote the interests of animals.  Check out our volunteer opportunities on the Volunteer page of this website!
