SAVE THE DOLPHINS! (updated 2009/09/03)

Published by NUS PEACE under Happenings

save the dolphins

Hey all!

I just watched the preview of The Cove last night, and it really grieved me to see people exploiting and slaughtering such peaceful and intelligent animals as dolphins! These animals belong in the wild, and we shouldn’t continue to bring these animals into captivity, and exploit them purely for entertainment purposes and profit.

The movie will be screened in selected GV theatres for the next 3 weeks. Do catch it if you can, and as soon as possible! The dolphin hunting season in Taiji, Japan, starts in september!

Movie Synopsis:

The Cove follows a team of activists and filmmakers as they infiltrate a heavily-guarded cove in Taiji, Japan. In this remote village they witness and document activities deliberately being hidden from the public: More than 20,000 dolphins and porpoises are being slaughtered each year and their meat, containing toxic levels of mercury, is being sold as food in Japan, often times labeled as whale meat.

The majority of the world is not aware this is happening. The Taiji cove is blocked off from the public. Cameras are not allowed inside and the media does not cover the story. It’s critical that we get the word out in Japan.  It’s critical that we get the word out-everywhere.  We believe that once the Japanese people know, they will demand change.

I just checked the savejapandolphins blog today, and i’m really happy to take this quote off the blog!

“Today is September 1st, the first day of the dolphin slaughter season in Japan. But when I arrived today by bus from Kansai Airport with media representatives from all over the world, the notorious Cove from the movie was empty. There were no dolphin killers in sight.” (Ric O’Barry)

The (wild) dolphins are safe, at least for now! :D And I’m incredibly psyched because to me, this really shows how the mere awareness about a single issue, can be so powerful in driving change!

But the hunting and trading of dolphins in Taiji, Japan is only one part of the issue. Even if dolphin hunting and trading stops, there’s also the question: what are we going to do about the dolphins who are currently in captivity, and especially the dolphins in sunny island Singapore, and the others that may be brought in  to the Sentosa IR,  which opens next year?

EVENT: Debate and Public Forum on Sharks and Sharks’ Fin

Published by NUS PEACE under Happenings

Hey all!

Check out this debate, happening this Friday evening (28 August ‘09)!

Are sharks killed mainly for their fins, their meat or both? Some believe that it is western propaganda that sharks are killed mainly for their fins, saying instead that they are slaughtered chiefly for their meat. However, the majority viewpoint is that the demand for sharks’ fin is the key factor driving sharks towards extinction. Hear both sides of the story and watch the exciting debate between proponents of the two camps. The debaters include Dr Giam Choo Hoo, Regional Representative for Asia (Alternate) for CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) Animals Committee, and Louis Ng, Executive Director of ACRES (Animal Concerns Research and Education Society). This debate and public forum will be chaired by Dr Shawn Lum, President of Nature Society (Singapore), and is open to the public and the media.

When: 28th August 2009, Friday, Time: 7.30pm-10pm

Where: Training Room P303, Spring Singapore, 2 Bukit Merah Central, Singapore 159835

Admission: Free

http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=259644850650

(This event is organised by the Nature Society of Singapore)

The debate is about the reasons causing sharks to become extinct, but the more important take home point: sharks are highly endangered, and the reasons for this are largely anthropogenic (caused by humans actively hunting them)! Whatever the outcome of the debate, the bottom line is, take action! (:

See you at the debate!

  • Library Exhibition
  • Meatless Thursdays (collaboration with NUS SAVE)
  • NUS Cat Café

A huge highlight of last saturday, was the welcome BBQ, where we launched our homemade vegan burger patties!!  Kudos to Andrew, Liling and Professor Brown, who worked long and hard on making these scrumptious patties, and thanks for putting together a wonderful BBQ and filling our happy bellies. (:

How did you like the vegan burgers at our PEACE BBQ?

I loved it! It beats most meat burgers I’ve had!

You mean that was a vegan patty? I couldn’t tell!

It didn’t taste meaty, but I liked it anyway.

It was okay, but could be better.

It’s a poor imitation of the real McCoy. I’d pick real meat any day.
