Just a suggestion for your readers to consider a robust federated search vendor, for those who may not want to go through the hassle of maintaining opensearch, and want a more robust interface that students could use for their research purposes.

My company (www.deepwebtech.com) has had some success in getting students to use and return to federated search.  See http://www.science.gov/, http://www.mednar.com/ and http://www.biznar.com/ for examples.
